Agricultural Genetic Resources in the Alps

A hundred livestock breeds in the Alpine countries are acutely endangered. This was the most important finding of a study on "Agricultural Genetic Resources" in the Alps in 1992/93. Especially alarming was the fact that, in 40% of cases, there appeared to have been no attempts to conserve the endangered breeds.

This study was now updated for 2000/2001, including a detailed study on the situation of cultivated plants. Since the first study, not only the sizes of the remnant populations have changed, but so have the legal and political conditions in these Alpine countries, ranging from France to Slovenia. After the summaries of the updated study have been available as download from the project page of the Monitoring Institute for some time, the printed version has now been published, too. The publication of the Bristol Foundation (178 pages with 98 coloured illustrations) contains the synthesis in 5 languages, and the enclosed CD-ROM contains the full text of the study in English and German. The text is designed as reference book, important contact addresses appear several times. The integrated search function facilitates the search for certain ex-pressions or simply to surf in the text. Websites and e-mail addresses are activated so that either browser or e-mail program may establish the desired link automatically.

2005/6: Continuous Monitoring of Agricultural Genetic Resources in the Alpine Region

The Continuous Monitoring of the Alpine Region has been launched. In order to achieve the aims of networking organisations and institutions, documenting and updating relevant data and building up an early warning system for critically endangered agricultural breeds and species, the Monitoring Institute is undertaking research based on the Delphi method. With this we want to achieve a clear picture of how the agricultural genetic resources in the Alps look today and what awaits them in the future. The results of the current Delphi research will be available in early 2007. The action will be repeated regularly in order to monitor changes.
