What is the problem and why

Subsidies

Rescue stations
It is to take into consideration, that a breed only at its place of origin will get subsidies. If a
breed from an island will be rescued on a station e.g. on Peloponnese, the chance to get
subsidies is very low. That depends on EC regulation 1257, where it is stated, that breeds only
should be kept at their place of origin.

Where is action needed and how
=> Establishment of herdbooks; motivating for co-operation with other farmers for
building security doubles:

=> Crossborder co-operation for exchange of experience and perhaps breeding material
etc, is to be aspired at

Goats

How many animals are left

Up to now there are two goat breeds, which are accepted officially: Skopelos goat and "Greek indigenous" (= Vlahiki)
Kri-Kri goat is stated as a wild goat and not as a feral breed (investigations took place and this is accepted by the experts)
Programme of typing should be continued. blood samples for genotyping (in the frame of Econogene if possible should be taken).
The goat types located by D. Dimos are accepted also by other (NGO-) experts.

Pigs

Up to now 1300 animals of the two black varieties (depending on the habitat) are found. More animals are assumed (about 2000 in total). There is a big danger of crossbreeding with wild pigs (arranged by the farmers to get a higher price for the meat).

A screening as a basis for a herdbook is foreseen within the conservation programme. Government pays subsidies (for each sow 225 Euro per year)

Other indigenous breeds of pigs are not known. Investigations took place by University Athens. Also historically there is not known any other indigenous breed of pigs.

Need of action
Seems to be administered by University of Athens, Dr. Deligeorgis.

Poultry

At University Athens there is one person working with rare poultry: Dr. Panoupolou. Contact shall be made to her to get more information and to find ways for the ongoing process.

Several different types/varieties (Mytilini; Attica, Thebe etc, about twenty island and mainland regions) seems to be occurring, but studies and publications are nearly not available.

Dogs

The Greek sheepdog is of lupoide type. A two year investigation in Serres (S. Chleiounakis) took place, exterieur was determined.

Up to now dogs are not accepted as farm animals.

In 2 villages of Serres 15 dogs, which are in acordance to the exterieur of the greek sheepdog, were found.

More searching tours will be done to build up a nucleus group.

Arctouros is working on a project for sheepdog conservation
