History IIt is believed that these horses are of Pindos origin. Generally, all Greek horses are descendants of the Balkan pony which has developed according to their living conditions into two types, the mountain and the field type. Pindos horse belongs to the small mountain type. These horses are not crossed with other breeds. They are hardy, content with simple food and walk with firm steps on rough roads. Their temperament is warmblooded and they endure the dry and hot conditions. In the old days were used for farm work but the last decades, they were abandonded and left alone to survive after the introduction of modern farming practice.

Remarks The semi-wild horses in Greece belong to Pindos breed (1.25-1.35m height). Horses which live near rivers where there is plenty of food all around the year, are a little bit taller than the horses living on the mountains. Most of these horses come from the abandoned ones during the civil war 1944-49 and some other from the immigration of people to foreign countries. On the other hand tractors and new methods in agriculture made their presence in the villagers useless. Town councils as well as individuals who adore horses take care of them.
